Transmission Fluid Basics

Here are some tips on how to proceed in checking your transmission fluid:

  • There are different kinds of transmission fluid, depending on the age of your car and if you have a manual or automatic transmission. Your car’s owner’s manual will tell you what kind of transmission fluid your car uses.
  • Plan on replacing your transmission fluid every 50,000 to 100,000 miles, depending on your driving habits in Boston, MA.
  • If your car hesitates before shifting gears, check your transmission fluid first to rule out that it’s not low. If it’s fine, it’s time to visit the service center.
  • If your car has a manual transmission, you will probably need a jack because the transmission’s plug is located under the car. The technicians at our service center can do this for you.

How to Check Your Transmission Fluid

  1. Park your car on a level surface and turn on the engine. Let it warm up.
  2. Find the transmission fluid dipstick. You owner’s manual will tell you where it’s located.
  3. Remove the dipstick and touch the fluid on the dipstick. The fluid should be nearly clear, with a pink hue when you rub it between your thumb and forefinger. If it’s cloudy or smells burnt, it’s time to change your transmission fluid.
  4. Wipe off the dipstick with a rag, insert it back into the vehicle. Pull out the dipstick again to check the level. If it’s below the “Full” marking, add more of the appropriate transmission fluid.
  5. Pour the transmission fluid in with the help of a funnel until the transmission fluid level up to the right spot.
